From The Modern Savage Handbook
Improvise your gym
Bear Grylls
You do not need a gym. You need somewhere to hang from and something heavy to pick up. Everything else is improvisation, which is the most Modern Savage skill there is.
A BAR
In a doorway, across a garage beam, a scaffold pole between two walls, or a branch. This is the only thing worth buying and it costs less than a fortnight of the gym you weren’t going to.
A RUCKSACK
Loaded with books, sand, or bottles of water. This is your chest press, your shoulder press, your row and your loaded squat. Adjust the weight by adding books.
THE FLOOR
Press ups, sit ups, bodyweight squats. Free, always available, no excuse.
A HILL
There is no upper limit on how strong you can get with a loaded bag and a hill.
SOMETHING AWKWARD
A sandbag, a log, a water container. Awkward loads build the kind of strength that transfers to real life, where nothing has a handle in the right place.
Total cost if you buy nothing at all: nothing. Improvise, adapt, overcome. It applies to a jungle and it applies to a garage in the rain.
